Annual Diabetic Foot Reviews
All diabetic patients seen at the clinic are offered a yearly diabetic foot check. This service involves examining the circulation and nerve function of the feet. The results are discussed with you, relevant advice given, and a copy of the assessment is sent to your practice nurse. If further tests or investigations are required, this will be arranged by the clinic.
If you have diabetes, it is essential that your feet are checked at yearly intervals due to the following reasons:
Diabetes may cause nerve damage known as peripheral neuropathy, which could increase your risk of foot complications such as ulceration.
Poor circulation may also arise from diabetes. This can affect how the body heals.
People with diabetes are more prone to infection.
Diabetes can affect the joints and make them stiffer. This may lead to an alteration of the foot shape thereby causing issues with footwear.
